Today we celebrate the remarkable women in mining and their invaluable contribution to our industry.
International Women's Day (IWD) is observed worldwide as people celebrate women's social, economic, cultural and political achievements and rally for accelerated gender parity.
We all have a role to play - collective activism is what drives change. As feminist Gloria Steinham once said, "The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist, nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights." We can contest gender stereotypes, call out discrimination, draw attention to bias and seek inclusion.
The theme of the IWD 2023 campaign aims particularly to get us talking about how we can #EmbraceEquity as a means of achieving equality. True inclusion and belonging come from recognising that each person has different circumstances and allocating resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome.
Globally, women form approximately 8-12 per cent of the mining workforce. Women in the industry hold a spectrum of roles, from labour-intensive to technical and managerial positions. The number of women working full-time in the Australian mining industry has skyrocketed in the past 20 years. The increase saw numbers leap from 8,700 to 45,000. Although the ratios remain heavily weighted on the male side, the increase of women in diverse roles across the board allows the industry to reinvent itself from the inside out.
An inclusive company culture is something we pride ourselves on at ComponentsONLY. We value alternative perspectives, challenge the status quo and curiously seek to understand conflicting ideas and opinions to genuinely overcome biases, see alternative perspectives, and make the best possible decisions. We have each other's back without question and always support each other while seeking what's best for the company and our clients.
Integrity, humility, and camaraderie are some values we strive to uphold at ComponentsONLY. These are fostered by being inclusive; empowering everyone and supporting them to achieve; treating others as equals with dignity, respect and fairness; and celebrating everyone's wins. More than anything, we believe in doing the right thing.
The ComponentsONLY women comprise about 30 per cent of our Australian team and occupy a diverse array of roles spanning the entire business. Whether it be our marketing, sales, management or operations teams, you'll find the CO women making things happen to keep you tracking.
